New Feature: WORKOUT OF THE MONTH

A lot of visits here are for workout reviews. Why? Cause we want an honest opinion of what works!

In light of that fact, I am launching a brand new feature called WORKOUT OF THE MONTH.

This will feature a new workout each month, most home-based, that you can try out REAP the benefits and rewards.

So, for August (we’re close enough), HERE is my top pick:

PiYo DEFINE YOURSELF

With PiYo, you can carve an intensely defined physique without jumps, weights, or straining

your joints. Chalene Johnson’s innovative program is sure to bring you some exciting business

opportunities, so here are some key points to remember.

What is PiYo?

PiYo is a low-impact, high-intensity body-transformation program that uses the most

effective Pilates- and yoga-inspired moves to sculpt long, lean muscles and burn fat.

Trainer Chalene Johnson uses fluid movements, keeping you in constant motion to give

you a dynamic cardio workout that typical Pilates or yoga workouts lack.

It’s low-impact so you won’t have to jump around or strain your joints.

It’s high-intensity so you get the fat-burning results of a more extreme program.

It’s designed to help you get an intensely defined, long and lean physique.

Who is it designed for?

Women and men who:

Want to lose weight and burn fat without the high-impact jumps or complex

choreography found in some cardio programs.

Want to build lean muscle but don’t want to lift heavy weights or bulk up.

Want to get the results of an extreme program without straining their joints.

Like the benefits of Pilates and yoga, but also want the calorie burn of a cardio workout.

Don’t have time to go from class to class to do separate cardio, strength, and

flexibility workouts.

Want a workout that doesn’t require a lot of equipment.

Want to give their body a break from extreme programs but keep getting results and

improve their performance in other sports by restoring their flexibility and core strength.

What’s included?

8 workouts on 3 DVDs (25–45 minutes each)

1 bonus workout (25 minutes)

Quick Start Guide to help you start seeing results fast

Get Lean Eating Plan to make clean eating fit into your lifestyle

60-Day Workout Calendar shows you what workouts to do when

Tape measure to help track your progress

Exclusive! You will get a FREE bonus workout—Hardcore on the Floor (a

$19.95 USD value)—when they order through you

Why should you get Piyo?

To burn calories and fat and lose weight without high-impact cardio or complicated

choreography.

To build long, lean, intensely defined muscles without lifting heavy weights that can

cause added bulk.

To give joints a break from extreme programs but still maintain results.

• To improve core strength and flexibility and improve athletic performance.

To get the benefits of Pilates and yoga without the stillness of yoga and repetitive

nature of Pilates.

To get the benefits of a strength, cardio, and flexibility program all in each workout,

without having to find the time to go to different classes.

To enjoy a new program from their favorite trainer Chalene Johnson.

How does PiYo work?

PiYo isn’t like standard Pilates and yoga classes that make you hold long, intense poses, or

lead you through dozens of repetitive, microscopic core movements. PiYo speeds everything

up—including your results—by introducing you to dynamic, flowing Pilates- and yoga-inspired

sequences that can burn serious calories at the same time as they lengthen and tone your

muscles and increase your flexibility. As you progress from one fluid movement to the next

without rest, you’ll maintain an optimal heart rate to incinerate calories throughout the whole

workout!

With every action-packed PiYo session, you’ll burn excess fat and sculpt and define your whole

body, as you minimize the aches and pains that can come along with high-impact workouts.

The result? You get a low-impact, high-intensity, total-body workout, giving you a physique that’s

long, lean, and powerfully defined.

My results have been phenomenal! I feel stronger and it is making all of my other workouts more effective. I’ve also lessened injuries and have begun to heal from old ones. The workouts are short enough for busy schedules OR for weirdos like me that like to work out like all day :)

Fun Friday DVD Review: Tracy Anderson Metamorphosis

Happy Friday people! It’s time to get excited :)

Today, I opted for a change of pace in blogs and decided to throw out a review I’ve been holding onto for a few weeks.

Tracy Anderson Metamorphosis

Below, I’ll tag on a little Q & A from Tracy’s website, but for now you’ll get to read my opinion. I know you’re excited so let’s get to it….

gwyneth-paltrow-tracey-anderson

Ms. Anderson (ok, I totally giggled as I wrote that since it reminds me of the Matrix…nerd) is probably best known as the buddy of svelte and sleek Gwyneth Paltrow. She also had a short stint as the exercise ADD poster child Madonna’s trainer as well. The former has stuck with Anderson for years and seems to only get better with age.

Tracy Anderson’s Method is similar to the Lotte Berk Method of the 80′s, with a cool new take and some very challenging moves. Her Metamorphosis program is divided by body type and the website even gives you a quiz to find which one suits you best. There’s Abcentric for those who carry more weight in the middle and upper body, or apple-shaped. Hipcentric is for those pear-shaped beauties who carry more weight in the hips and thighs. Glutecentric is for those blessed with junk in the trunk.  And there is also Omnicentric for those who tend to just carry weight period. I purchased the Omnicentric as I wanted to give it all a go :)

The Metamorphosis Program comes with the following:

  • A signature dance cardio workout. Tracy was made famous by these cardio workouts and swears by their effectiveness to whittle the body and keep it tight.
  • 9 customized muscular structure workouts
  • Fitness guide and tracker
  • Nutrition Guide (a little low cal, but I must say it is delicious and focuses on nutrients).
  • A tape measure as this will track your progress
  • Access to an online community (I’ll admit I’m anti-social and did not take advantage of this)

Each tracking segment is split into 10 days with a 6 day on, 1 day off approach. You do cardio and your muscle work every day for 6 days, rest 1 day and then start back. You will only be on each muscle work for 10 days total and then progress to the next. This makes this particular workout standout for me since it eliminates boredom (the cardio stays the same BUT she does have other DVD’s available) and you get the most bang for your buck in 1 hour. The equipment needed is only light handweights and a mat, plus a little space to move.

Now, when you first embark on the program you will be confused! Embrace it, that’s part of the process :) . Tracy gives pretty clear instruction, but her workouts are different and it can take a few tries to really feel like you “get it”. She has sequenced them beautifully though and your confidence, coordination and balance will build as your waistline shrinks. She uses techno in the videos and y’all know I’m a HUGE techno fan! If that’s not your taste, you can turn the music off and play your own soundtrack. This gives the viewer a bit more creative freedom.

Now, let’s talk about what we really want to know: does it work?

Tracy’s claim is that her Method works the smaller muscle groups and cross fibers to help promote a lean, tight and toned appearance to the body. While many are wondering about the validity of these claims, I just put it to the test. Here’s the big thing for me: I have an athlete’s build and I’m an easy gainer. What does that mean? It means I have NO waist (I’m pretty straight from shoulders to hips, even when my body fat is low) and I can put on muscle or fat very easily, so my legs tent to stay large which makes jean shopping less than stellar. With regular work in Ms. Anderson’s :) Method, I have noticed a couple of key changes. First, I am the proud owner of a slightly smaller waist (by measurement 4 inches smaller than my hips as of today) AND my legs have slimmed down while maintaining their strength and muscle definition. In conclusion, I’m taking on a slightly more girlish figure :)

There are a few drawbacks: the price tag can seem hefty, but I’ve paid more for less effective programs. Also, it moves fast and it can be intimidating to those who fear choreography. Chill! Run through a few times and thank goodness you’re just in your home.

Personally, Metamorphosis is worth the cost for your home library and can be used after your 90 days to refresh some of those groups and mix into your lifestyle.  It’s a timeless workout with little equipment and the results to back up the claims. Have patience with yourself and get ready for slim!

Michelle

Why Metamorphosis?

Q:
What is the Tracy Anderson Method?
A:
Based on over a decade of research on different muscular structure groups, Tracy Anderson has created a fitness method that can transform any problem area or body type.  Tracy has created and patented over 3,000 fitness movements and her varying moves target every muscle in your body. The sequences strategically exhaust the muscles in a way that does not create bulk, and that strengthens the connection to the body. This program is designed for anyone to achieve a perfect body naturally
Q:
How do I tell what body type I am?
A:
There are 4 different DVDs depending on your problem areas and fitness goals.  If you would like to target a specific area or if you would like to maintain and tone your total body, there is a DVD for you.  You need to identify your body zone and then you will receive a package for your body type that will exercise your entire body but will target a specific area.

  • Abcentric (Stomach):  If a flat stomach is your primary goal, go with the Abcentric.  This program concentrates on the lower stomach and back area.
  • Hipcentric (Thighs): This workout is designed specifically for those who are pear-shaped and hoping to tone up those thighs.
  • Glutecentric (Butt):  If your butt is your main area of concern, this is the workout for you.  Whether it’s too flat or you need a lift, Glutecentric is catered to lifting and toning your butt.
  • Omnicentric (General):  If you are seeking overall weight loss or a toned look, have a substantial amount of weight to lose or not one problem area in particular, chose Omnicentric.
Q:
Why are these DVDs different than any other series?
A:
Fitness workouts and exercise equipment are generally one-size-fits all, regardless of what are your designated fitness needs. The Metamorphosis by Tracy Program will give you access to Tracy teaching and provide you a customized step-by-step workout by home. Since this is a targeted approach, your problem areas will be eliminated faster than with other workouts. This is not just a DVD series, this is a lifestyle program and will require dedication.
Q:
How long is each workout?
A:
It’s important to devote 1 hour a day to working out and my fitness program will be ½ an hour devoted to cardio and ½ an hour devoted to the muscular structure work. This is a manageable amount of time and will help you achieve the maximum results for your body type.
Q:
How often do I need to do the DVDs to see the results?
A:
I recommend doing the Tracy Anderson Method 6 days a week for 1 hour each day.  Dedication is really important and adding a workout into your daily routine will help your health and wellness.  Taking the entire weekend off or getting into a schedule of taking too many days off will not help your muscles achieve long-term results. However, you definitely should not workout seven days a week.
Q:
Do I need to supplement these DVDs with additional workouts?
A:
No, that is the beauty of this fitness system that I have created, I have spent my years of research to give you a concentrated hour workout that will  help you see results more effectively than any other workout program on the market.  If you follow the training and fitness guidelines, you will not need to supplement with any additional workouts and will fulfill both your cardio and muscular structure requirement for each day.
Q:
Do I have to have experience with the Tracy Anderson Method to start these DVDs?
A:
You do not need to have prior experience with the Tracy Anderson Method to successfully complete these workouts and achieve your desired fitness results.  There are all levels of expertise within this program, and the targeted approach will help you combat your problems areas while still giving you a total body workout.
Q:
I’m over age 50, are the DVDs appropriate for all ages and athletic abilities?
A:
There is no age restriction on these DVDs, however, it is recommend that you take the time to review the breakdown steps and various exercises and do not push your body when you are first starting the method.  If you are of an older age or if you have a physical impairment, you should be very careful with your body when first beginning all of exercises.
Q:
Why is there changing content and what is the reason the content changes?
A:
As with any workout, repetition can make your large muscles bulk and can neglect your smaller muscle groups. The changing content will be sure to give you a total body workout and you won’t neglect any of your muscle groups.
Q:
Why do you believe in a dance-based cardio as opposed to other traditional cardio exercises?
A:
I don’t believe in bulking muscles or overworking your large muscle groups. With dance cardio you are constantly working different muscles and using your entire body. Additionally there is a mind/body connection that you don’t get with most traditional cardio routines.  Anticipating what the next move will be and how you will move your body to achieve that move is a large part of the cardio connection.
Q:
When will I first start to see results?
A:
Within your first week of following my method you will start to feel your body changing.  It may be the case that certain muscles will start aching that have never ached before and your body may feel exhausted.  This is all part of the process and nothing is ever achieved with out some hard work and determination and my method is no difference.

WORKOUT WEDNESDAY: JILLIAN MICHAELS’ HARD BODY REVIEW

It’s time again for another workout DVD review! I can feel your excitement, so let’s dive right in shall we?

JMhardbody

This newest workout from the reigning queen of Biggest Loser female trainers (see what I did there?) delivers a WOW for every 45 minutes. There are 2 forty-five minute workouts contained in this tiny package and they both pack in plenty of results. There really isn’t much negative I can say, except maybe more pumped up music. Aside from that, Hard Body is spot on.

These workouts are designed with results in mind and JM does a fantastic job of cueing and keeping you motivated. As always, there are modifications given for every move, which makes you excuses fall to the wayside. The sequencing is superb for both cardiovascular health, lean muscle-building and balance. Jillian covers it all in 45 minutes, all with a light sense of humor mixed with her own personal brand of training.

You can check out a clip HERE and add this workout to your weekly routine. In my professional opinion, this DVD is suitable for all fitness levels.

DVD Review: Les Mills Body Combat

It’s that time again! Home based workouts are a great way to shed the weight OR just a great addition to a gym routine. Now, I must give you a little disclaimer here: I am a certified Les Mills Instructor, but I promise I am not biased!

Today’s review: Les Mills Body Combat

Let’s jump right in to the meat and potatoes of it…..THIS DVD has become one of my absolute favorites for in-home training. Now, I have a boxing gym in my garage, so when I feel like a good strike I head out there; however, COMBAT gives me the cardio and strength conditioning of a true fighter along with hot music and some of the most entertaining instructors around.

One of the major complaints about workout DVDs is the instruction and repetitiveness of the personalities. Les Mills Combat is led by Dan and Rach, along with some other instructors who team up to bring you the variety you feel like you’re missing in other DVDs. Instructor personality is key to the Les Mills formula and believe me, they only take the BEST. With a variety of personalities, styles and let’s face it…sexy accents :) You’re sure to stay motivated throughout your entire 60+ day transformation. They promise you a different body in 60 days, and this is one program I totally believe does the trick.

Combat utilizes interval training in every workout. Intervals happen when your heart rate is jacked up then brought down a notch, only to be taken up again. This is a proven way to burn MORE fat and calories than with traditional training. Want to take a look at what you could be in for? Check it out HERE!

The best thing about COMBAT is that it mixes martial arts. Now, you know I LOVE some MMA, so this is right up my alley! Instead of simply kickboxing or boxing, you get to taste a bit of all the martial arts, including some moving katas to teach you how to control your body. COMBAT also provides detailed training sessions so you can learn how to effectively punch and kick. This enables you to expedite results and avoid injury.

There are several packages you can choose from when looking at the COMBAT DVDs. The most basic is a good place to start and is listed right here:

Unleash your inner warrior with 7 body-shredding workouts that harness the explosive techniques of mixed martial arts with the hard-hitting cardio of high intensity interval training.

Plus, you’ll get these practical tools to maximize your results: Stay With the Fight Fitness Guide, Eat Right for the Fight Nutrition Guide, LES MILLS COMBAT 30:LIVE! BONUS WORKOUT, Measurement Tracker Card, Tape Measure, and Online Support.

This package has everything you need to get started strong. If you feel the need to progress, just look into the additional packages.

Always remember that fuel is important and one of the best ways to fuel before or after your booty kicking COMBAT workout is HERE.

Check out COMBAT for a great total body workout, OR as a superb cardio addition to your muscle-building routine. Want great shoulders? I know the secret!

See you next time, and remember to LIVE OUT LOUD!

NEW DVD REVIEW! Biggest Loser Power XTrain

Hi guys!

It’s been a LONG time since I’ve reviewed a new workout DVD, so I thought I’d hop into the new year with The Biggest Loser DVD series.

For those wondering, although Jillian is back on the show (which airs this Sunday evening) she’s not in the video.

This DVD follows the same circuit style fashion as the others. Why? Well, circuits are the BEST form of exercise when you’re trying to lose weight. It’s effective because it keeps the heart rate up and provides cardio as well as strength training. We ALL know that is essential to keep the skin pulling back to the muscle. Now, as a disclaimer we all know that we cannot expect Biggest Loser style results unless we’re already on the show…..and have a couple hundred pounds to lose :) These DVDs do appeal to those just jumping back into working out or trying it out for the first time.

The big question: Do they work? Yes they do, in my opinion. The problem with any DVD is that it is up to the individual to push play though. They can only film it for you, not do it for you :)

Power X Train takes your workouts to a different level. This DVD is more like actual training in that there isn’t a lot of pre-choreographed movements and everybody is on their own pace. All trainers featured do give awesome form tips, but ya’ll know Bob is the favorite! He states at one point “I focus on your FORM first, then reps” and I couldn’t agree more. Bob is in true form throughout his part, making sure even the home viewers know exactly what to look for in their form. This is of great importance as form is key to not only preventing injury but also expediting your results.

You need your own body weight and some handheld weights for this DVD and you will also need some space. They take you through your paces, but you are always encouraged to stay at the level that works best for you. As always, modifiers are front and center and you can choose the former Biggest Loser contestant you want to follow. As with anything else, consistency is key. If you’re in love with the Biggest Loser DVD series, this is a great one to add to your rotation.

Until I see you again, remember….LIVE OUT LOUD!

Michelle

P.S. Who’s planning on watching this season?

DVD Review: Jillian Michaels Killer Abs

Hey guys!

Welcome to Monday!

Ok, let’s jump in to JM’s newest attack on fat: KILLER ABS.

I love this DVD! The thing that works the best about Jillian’s DVD’s is the time factor. She is well aware that we all have lives outside of the workout room and she fits awesome workouts into short amounts of time. As always, there are 3 levels throughout the DVD workouts. This allows you to build your fitness level or simply change the pace as needed.

Jillian delivers superb instruction with a large focus on form. You know I love form since THAT is they key to changing your body shape! So, I naturally love her emphasis on good form. She also gives clear instruction and plenty of options for the movements.

Each level is about 30 minutes and gives you a killer workout. The core is one of my favorite body parts to train and JM has found new ways to do it!

I highly recommend throwing this DVD in your rotation 3-5 times per week to help you get the lean abs you desire.

Have a healthy day!

Turbo Fire vs. Tae Bo

This has to be the ultimate showdown between home based workouts right?

Tae Bo and Turbo Fire are both based on burning fat through fun, easy to follow, high energy kickboxing workouts; however, they are quite different from one another.

Keep in mind I have done both of these and this is simply one professionals opinion.

Tao Bo:

Billy Blanks created Tae Bo decades ago and in his basement. Billy is noted as an ex-military man who has always had a passion for health and fitness as well as a man of great faith. To date, there are countless Tae Bo videos on the market (most of which reside on my shelves!) PLUS Billy has just released Tae Bo TV where brand new workouts are released weekly to keep your routine changing and keep you motivated. Billy’s videos are always in class setting and He is strict on form and function THEN speed. The music is usually house music set to support the rhythms of the class.

Tao Bo is a blend of martial arts and dance which helps burn mad calories and tone lean muscle. Another upside is the positivity of Mr. Banks himself cannot help but rub off on you. Most participants of Tae Bo, either live or DVD, report an overall lift in mood and higher self-esteem. I know I feel much better after a great sweat session where I can fight off all my haters! LOL

Tae Bo is incredibly versatile to any fitness program and while it is intense, it is also suitable for all fitness levels. You heard me right: ALL fitness levels. You are encouraged to “walk it out, but just keep going” many times through the workouts and you never feel as though anybody in the video thinks you’re the couch slug you may view yourself as (hey, I’ve been there!). I have been enjoying Tae Bo videos and DVD’s for a couple of decades now and really appreciate the simple choreography and focus on form. Overall, Tae Bo is one of my absolute favorite home based workouts for dropping inches and trimming the waistline.

Turbo Fire

Turbo Fire (TF) is a high energy, calorie incinerating workout from fitness mastermind Chalene Johnson. TF comes from the Beach Body line up of fitness products and stands up to all the hype. TF is a blend of choreographed kickboxing routines mixed with some funky music and awesome HIIT (high intensity interval training) circuits.Turbo Fire was originally made for “fitness athletes”. These are the elite in class fitness. It is those who have procured an extreme level of fitness through body conditioning mostly through group exercise and challenging sequencing. There comes a point where a well conditioned body needs more challenge. THAT is what Turbo Fire was made to provide: a challenge.

Turbo Fire has a kid sister, Turbo Jam, that started the rage in fitness kickboxing. These classes were created for those who wanted the washboard abs of a fighter without the bruises and scars. TF is more challenging than Turbo Jam. BUT options are given for lower intensity. TF is not suitable for ALL fitness levels, as it does require some sort of fitness background and an understanding of choreography. Don’t let that scare you off though! Start with Turbo Jam and get used to the slower cues, then work your way up.

Expect serious sweat with any TF workout. You can also expect to see very visible changes in body composition as well as weight loss. All of these results must be hard fought for though. TF is a program, meaning it comes with a meal plan and training schedule to help ensure results (side note: Tae Bo has a couple of those as well, such as Tao Bo Amped). Remember to pace yourself and you’ll be flying as high as Chalene in no time.

For more information on Turbo Fire visit: www.beachbodycoach.com/michellecfit

Turbo Fire and Tae Bo make regular appearances in my home workouts throughout the seasons, though I do favor the feel of my glove actually hitting the bag and my feet hitting the pavement on most days.

Do some research to find the best fit for you and enjoy your workouts!

Have a healthy day,

Michelle

A Few Favorite Things

Aside from red lipstick and stilettos, I do have a few fave go-to exercise vids when I am feeling lackluster on the motivation side.

Check them out:

Ellen Barrett Barefoot Cardio

Tae Bo Insane Abs

Amy Dixon’s Give Me 10: Core Cuts

Bob Harper’s Total Body Transformation

Core Fusion Power Sculpt

Cathy Friedrich’s Circuit Blast

Jennifer Galardi’s Sweating Sexy

These are just a few. I also LOVE Tracy Anderson (in a love/hate kind of way!) and Sadie Nardini. I will be posting reviews of those 2 later :)

So, check it out, plan a video swap and just move! One of the things we should be most grateful for is the ability to move daily, so use it!

In health,

New DVD Releases and My Personal Home Workout Favorites

Good Monday Morning!

You know I love good, home based workouts and a lot of times it is really nice to just zone out and let somebody else tell us what to do right?

Enter fitness DVD’s. At home DVD’s are a great way to get your workouts in and get your sweat on, provided you have the motivation to push play (hey, we can’t do everything for you!).

Some of the drawbacks of in home DVD’s are the boredom factor (same joke every time!) and queuing and safety issues. It is my belief that the benefits far outweight the drawbacks and as long as you know your body and stay within your capacity then you can bypass injury. Also, mix it up! One fun thing is to put together a Fitness DVD swap with your friends, and you get bonus points if everybody brings a healthy recipe to swap as well. :)

Here are some newer Fitness DVD’s on the market:

Billy Blanks Tae Bo Express

I just love me some Billy! The entire Tae Bo community is really awesome and worth getting to know. This DVD is perfect for those wanting the benefits of Tae Bo without the hour-long workouts. This DVD 8 different and focused workouts lasting 11-12 minutes a piece. So you can feel free to put together your own workout based on the time you have available and what you are wanting to accomplish. There is bootcamp and even toning as well as abs all on one awesome DVD. the energy is truly un-matchable and as always, Billy is dead on with queuing and choreography.

Amy Dixon Gimme 10: Core Cuts

If you do not know Amy Dixon, please go check her out. I may be partial as I have been a fan ever since I saw her first kickboxing stint on excersizetv, plus I love her hair. Still, find her and see what she’s all about. Amy is not only cute as a button, but her queuing is above and beyond which makes working out at home safer and more effective. Core Cuts offers 6 different workouts for your abs, including the stability ball! I love the ball! So, these are workouts that can fit easily into any schedule and provide a total core workout, instead of just the 6 pack. By the way, I must say I enjoy core cuts even better than Bob Harper’s Totally Ripped Core. Simma down! Amy gives clear instruction with an underlying tenderness that enables you to try a little harder, instead of feeling a little beat down.

Jillian Michaels Body Revolution

Take note, this system is not available YET, but you can get on a waiting list. OK, so I have to say, Jillian is still surprising me with new things. I mean, I really think that sometimes she’s done, but this system has proven me wrong. This is an entire body transformation system with 15 workouts, spanning all workout genres, from kickboxing to core to aerobics to toning to yoga, it has it all! These DVD’s have a lot more pretty people to look at :) and in true Jillian form the instructions are clear and modifications are given and encouraged. Spot on!

Bob Harper’s Beginners Weight Loss Transformation

Ready for a slightly softer approach? Just slightly :) Bob Harper has taken into account the fact that some are either new to exercise or are carrying a lot of extra weight (hey, I totally know it is NO fun to do a push up with 100 extra pounds on your frame!) and has adapted to help those who want to get in shape have a solid platform. This DVD is true to Bob’s form and point of view, so don’t expect a ton of sugar-coating. It is a great place to start and one you can come back to again and again. Slightly less harsh and a whole lotta sweat!

Those are the newbies, here are a few I keep in rotation:

Tae Bo Amped

Exhale Core Fusion Power Sculpt

Tracy Anderson Method

Sadie Nardini Yoga

Amy Dixon Breathless Body

I like to mix up my workouts as often as possible since I tend to get bored. My own personal routines have yoga every day, with longer sessions 3-4 times per week.

That’s what works for me, find out what works for you and stay fit and healthy!

Michelle

My HONEST Opinion (review) for P90X and P90X2

Hello guys!

I hope all of you are rocking your day to the best of you.:-)

Today I am going to give you my professional review of BeachBody Programs: P90X and P90X 2. If you’re a devoted Xer, just simma down!

Let’s dive in shall we?

I have done both P90X and P90X2 (my hubs joined me for the latter) and both have their ups and downs. First and foremost, both are more advanced programs so they are not for those just coming off the couch. The truth is that Tony Horton never really intended for these to be weight loss programs, but rather conditioning programs. So, for those just beginning who state “WOW this is hard!” You would be correct.

Now this does not mean that you need to put the DVD away and return to the couch. Rather, I advise steps towards developing more functional fitness platform before embarking on the P90 revolution. Beach Body wants to end the trend of obesity, yes, but they are also a company that makes profits. They focus on the weight loss side because that is what sells.

There are a few things I do not care for with these programs. One is that the instruction revolves around Tony’s large personality. It’s either love it or hate it. I’ve been instructing and training for a decade, so I know that it really matters what people get from the personality in order to stay committed to the workouts. The sequencing of the exercises is fair. Sequencing is a large key in injury prevention. The pace can be a bit much for those just starting AND it seems a bit slow for those more used to a group environment. Now, onto the moves themselves. Professionally, they are showy. There are a variety of moves that can be more effective when coming from the base rather than focused on how awesome you can make the body look. This is a problem for me because I come from a different training style. I train functionally and focus on things from the ground up and the inside out.

All in all, this is not one that I reach for nor do I use any of the fancy moves with clients. For those who are committed to the person behind the screen (and a large part of the Beach Body brand) you will probably force enjoyment and reap some results. My largest problem thus far is the number of injuries that have been reported from those doing the program. Now, are the injuries due to poor sequencing and lack of clear instruction or are they the result of NOT having hands on training for such a difficult program? Really it could swing either way.

Beach Body has some other, lower impact, programs that offer great results as well. They have also recently began certifying instructors for P90X. Keep in mind the majority of these instructors have NO other certification, so proceed with caution.

If you are able to get your hands on a certified personal trainer that can help you set a solid foundation, then the X may work a whole lot better for you. My ranking of this program is about a 2 out of 5 simply for the injuries.

Have a Healthy Day!

Michelle

For strength training that delivers, sans injuries, check out Les Mill’s Pump and Chalean Extreme.
