Good Monday morning Fit Lifers!

I hope all of you had an enjoyable weekend and got what you needed out of it. You know, sometimes it is ok to just enjoy a lazy weekend!

So, to kick off this beautiful Monday, I wanted to stop by the Summer Solstice and move down to more news and some encouragement. So jump in, life is waiting :)

Athleta Summer Solstice

As you know, Summer Solstice was this past Wednesday. Apart from it being the longest day of the year, it is also a big day in a lot of yoga traditions. Just look up Summer Solstice on YouTube and you’ll find all sorts of interesting things! Most yoga practitioners believe that Summer Solstice is the perfect time for new beginnings. It’s sort of like a retake on your New Year’s Resolutions. In light of this, yogis from all over move out into the open air to partake in yoga sessions and friendships. Athleta sponsored many such outings to coincide with their extremely large Summer solstice in Times Square, New York. By the way, the whole thing was streaming live and was fantastic to watch!

Here in Houston, Athleta sponsored a morning yoga session taught by 4 teachers from Yoga West in Katy. The class was held outside and though rain seemed to threaten the comfort level a bit, it held off for the morning. See? A new beginning already :) My Fit Foods also prepared a wonderful breakfast for participants and those who were just there to check it out. What if you just let go?

I posted last week about the changes I have noticed since taking a more yoga approach to life in general. The physical changes have been phenomenal as I spent my weekend trying on clothes in my closet that I had always fought to get in to. Now, they simply slip on. No deprivation, no starvation and certainly no degradation. One interesting thing that I have noticed is that as I read through my Bible each morning, I never read of people lamenting over the size clothing they were or a lack of 6 packs. I am coming to realize that we were never meant to obsess about our weight or size.

Think about it this way: if I were so obsessed with my size/weight that the majority of my time was spent working out, planning and prepping meals and the lot, I would never have the time to focus on my true purpose: bringing encouragement to YOU. Oh, I have been on the other side where my days were filled with 4 hours of working out and the other 20 planning (yes, even in my sleep). I was bitter and angry and, to be honest, not much use to God as I did not fulfill my purpose.

So, what would happen if we could all let go of what we are holding onto so tightly? That need for perfection? The call to certain fashion? The thought that we will do what we are called to do when…? Can we truly let that go and move past these road blocks into a more abundant and fulfilling life? We are promised both of those things, but we must align our priorities to really reap our treasures.

What’s New?

So, I am really excited about a whole bunch of newness coming in to my life. For starters, I will be attending the She Speaks conference in July. This is a conference for Christian speakers and writers and I pray that the path with be carved and divine intervention will plan out divine meetings.

I’m also beginning a yoga tour of the Houston area. My first stop will be Yoga One. they have a great class on Friday nights called Box of Chocolates, and yes, it involves chocolate. From there I plan on visiting as many studios as I can and writing up reviews on the experience. So stay tuned!

I’ll be offering a yoga immersion here in Baytown (just outside of Houston) September 21-23. This weekend will be full of ways to increase your awareness and focus. We’ll be practicing yoga and implementing Core Strength Vinyasa Yoga, which can be used within any and all yoga disciplines. This weekend will help you understand core strength, detoxification, the benefits of yoga, breathing and even cooking! We’ll have a cooking demo and lesson as well as anatomy and physiology lectures and asana practices. No worries, I assure you it will be full of fun and you will not regret this relaxing weekend.

Yoga, wine and chocolate is coming to our area as I have teamed up with a local wine vineyard to offer a class in the late Fall.

Summer Solstice is here! What does that mean?

THIS Wednesday, June 20th, Athleta is offering free yoga classes in honor of Summer Solstice.

Athleta, the Sonoma, CA based premium fitness and lifestyle brand for women, will welcome the Summer Solstice on Wednesday, June 20 by inviting yogis across the country to join together and share a collective ‘om’ on the longest day of the year. In conjunction with the Solstice in Times Square: Athleta Mind Over Madness all-day yoga event in New York, where over 9,000 yogis are expected, Athleta will provide yogis of all skill levels with the chance to find tranquility and peace at its 16 stores.

 

Visit the local Athleta store in Houston at Town & Country Village for a free outdoor yoga class from 9am – 10am on June 20, led by local yoga instructors from Yoga West.  Yogis will meet four instructors in-store at 9am, and travel outside for a “round robin” style yoga class, during which each instructor will offer her individual style practice in the park at Town & Country Village.  Visit www.Yogawest.com for more information.

One lucky participant will receive a free Athleta yoga outfit and yoga mat and another will receive a $75 gift certificate.  The first 20 yogis to check-in will receive headbands and other Athleta goodies.

OK, so there is so much going on here! First, you get some free yoga. Let’s go over the benefits of yoga for a moment, shall we?

Wow! A lot to pack in to the post today, but you’ll enjoy every second :)

Athleta Shopping Haul.

Aside from the fabulous modeling above (hahahahaha!), Athleta is a company worth looking into. So, when they asked me to look into things, I did just that. It was my extreme pleasure. First off, I visited the newest Athleta Store in Houston, located at 600 West Sam Houston Parkway North, and I was very pleased with the experience. The employees were helpful without being overbearing. There was a wait for the fitting rooms (which are spacious!), but it was a pleasant wait. They even had Luna bars placed in baskets and seats for your co-shoppers (for me, my husband and kids). I ended up with a nice haul from the store, complete with an everyday dress and what are now my absolute favorite pants ever.

Athleta Training Guides.

Aside from making very high quality athletic and lounge wear, Athleta is fully committed to female athletes. Just take a look at the swim wear line. The tops and bottoms stay put, no matter the sport :) . Athleta also has a comprehensive training guide available for athletes as well as those of us who just wish we were athletes! This guide is available for download on their Chi site HERE. This training guide is one of the best I have seen and is compact enough to put in your bag and read at work (you know you do!). This guide has training for 5K, 10K, Half Marathons, Sprint and Intermediate Distance Triathlons. As an added bonus, you get nutrition guidelines to prepare you for your race and to take you all the way through race day and recovery. Athleta doesn’t stop there. They also give you packing lists for both running and triathlons. It’s a small packet full of information to get you to your health and fitness goals. I encourage you to check it out and get started! Yeah, you can get it now. Like I said before, Athleta is committed to female athletes.

To wrap a beautiful bow on all that Athleta is offering, they have selected some of their most valuable performers for both form and function within your fitness wardrobe. These consist of six pieces of athletic wear that can withstand the most rigorous of activities and still look great while keeping you intact. These styles can be found in Athleta’s 2012 Summer Look Book on Athleta.com. I tried on the running shorts yesterday and decided on the spot that those are a must have for my next trip. They easily beat out Nike and Under Armour for fit, feel and function. Big words, I know, but they do deliver!

We all know that Bob Harper has become one of the most loved “tough love” trainers out there. AND, if you read my DVD reviews, then you know his videos are among my most favorites (even for yoga, which is a hard category!). Now, he has gone above and beyond the call of duty with the newest section to his site HERE. Bobharper.com is the newest addition to Bob’s fight against fat and it offers challenging classes to help you reach your hotness goals. Not only do you get classes lead by Bob, but you also get personal training from Bob’s trainer as you follow Bob through a workout. These are not for the faint of heart. Beginners beware, some of these courses are a bit more advanced, but modifications are just about always offered. In conjunction with the classes, you also get food and nutrition advice from the Quaker Oatmeal Advocate himself. All of this is $9.95 per month and worth at least looking into.
