How Can You Make a Challenge Work for You?

It’s January 10th and already people are talking about how empty the gyms are becoming. It’s been ten days!

This begs the question of WHY? Why do so many give up on goals so easily? I have a few answers to that question:

  1. The goals were not thought out well at all. Saying you want to lose 50 pounds while chugging your 3rd glass of Champaign on New Year’s Eve does not translate into actual pounds lost. Goals must be thought out thoroughly and this question must be answered: “What am I willing to give up to reach my goal?”
  2. The thought that actually planning, and not just showing up, is involved rarely crosses our minds. Simply signing up for the gym or re-igniting your commitment to push play will not happen unless planning is done.
  3. We underestimate the power of habit. That extra weight did not just show up one day. It packed on due to habits that had formed. That could be the popular habit of sitting to watch TV (GUILTY! Darn you, Big Bang Theory!), or the habit of piling a little more on your plate than 1 serving. Eating at fast food places is a HABIT. People don’t really think those greasy burgers taste better…it’s just easier to swing by because of habit. Good news: YOU can create healthy habits too :)
  4. We’re confused on our priorities. Take this example: if my #1 priority is spending time with my kids in the evening because I work all day, but I pony up for a gym membership and vow to go after work for a 1-2 hour workout 5 days per week…well, I end up conflicted and the gym membership, the workouts, and even my own kids become a serious source of stress.
  5. We lack a support system. You have to admit, it works better when somebody can be there to offer a shoulder to cry on, a hand to help you up, or a swift kick in the pants whenever you need it during this journey. We were created for community! People need each other in many aspects of life and reaching goals is a huge one!

THIS is where group challenges can be extremely beneficial. Taking a nutrition and fitness challenge in a group of like-minded individuals has been shown to:

  • Help you stick to the program
  • Keep you excited about the results to come
  • Develop new, healthy habits
  • You’ll lose more weight and inches

As the challenge season opens up (I’ll have some info on mine towards the bottom), here are my top tips for seeing GREAT results:

  • Stay engaged. Check with other challengers daily and mark your weekly progress so you can notice the changes even if you don’t see them right away.
  • Choose the right program. Not all programs are created equal. You may like certain trainers, be at a different fitness level, or have different goals, but make sure you think about the time you have to commit and what you really want to accomplish.
  • ASK QUESTIONS! I think far too many people fall off the goal wagon simply because they are unwilling to ask questions. I promise, whatever it is your coach has probably heard it before, so ask away!
  • Trust the process. We all want results yesterday, but your body doesn’t work like a drive through…you have to give it time and effort.
  • Keep track of your progress. Maybe you lost 2 pounds last week and none this week, BUT you did 5 extra push ups. It’s all progress! Strength gains, weight loss, cardiovascular efficiency…they all get better.

I’ve run a few and made my fair share of mistakes I admit. Through all of the previous challenges, I have learned some golden lessons that will help make this years challenge a guaranteed success! I believe in these challenges because home-based fitness is what sparked my love for health and transformed my body entirely. I was able to lose over 100 pounds while still being a mommy to my 2 young kids. Now, I’m able to share that with others in a far better way than I ever dreamed. Wait for it…I’ll be releasing a video about my experience with home-based fitness programs and nutrition next week. :)

March 2012 CHALLENGE GROUPS

OK, so I posted online yesterday that I had 14 people sign up for my previous challenge and that 5 had weighed in after 1 week for a total weight loss of 26 pounds! That’s awesome and I am so happy for them :) I have also had several challengers comment on the fact that their energy levels are sky-high and they are feeling better every day. Even more awesome! In light of all of these great results, I am starting 2 more challenge groups at the beginning of March. Read on and PLEASE follow the instructions!

Challenge Group 1: This challenge will consist of 60 days and I will only take 5 people into this group. Tough LOVE Tuesday

Time for some tough love! The reason I know those excuses most people depend on is because I lived with those excuses weighing me down and keeping me from my goals. I don’t want you to have to do that! Take a deep breath and plunge in; the water feels great over here :)

DVD REVIEW TIME! JM Banish Fat, Boost Metabolism

Am I totally late on this or what? I actually had and DID this DVD for a while until I outgrew it. This DVD is challenging enough for beginner to intermediate levels and offers loads of variety to make moves harder or more doable (I hate to say easier! The moves should never be easy). Jillian Michaels seems a little softer, personality wise, with these DVDs. That’s good news for those who complain about her hardcore approach. The DVD itself runs about 55 minutes, with the actual workout clocking in at about 48 minutes. Jillian uses her trademark circuits and the best news is there is NO equipment. You’re toning with your own body weight so there are a lot of body weight exercises that are extremely effective. Her brand of kickboxing is not really my cup of tea (it’s a little soft around the edges), but she does a great job of keeping the flow going and moving from upper to lower exercises quickly to increase calorie burn. I think this is a great workout for beginner/intermediates and if you find yourself looking for more of a fat burning challenge, I suggest my man Shaun T’s INSANITY. P90X2: Two Days in Review

Hey guys!

So, after reviewing tough love, I decided it may be a little too tough today, but you will see it at some point! For now, let me tell you what’s going on in the Carlson house…

For the past 2 mornings I have started waking up at 4:15 (as opposed to 4:30) and setting up our living room for the battle! My hubs and I are doing P90X2 at 5 a.m. every morning and I, for one, am LOVING IT! I needed a new challenge thrown at me because even though I am a sicko that enjoys a good sweat session, I can become complacent in my workout habits and stop seeing results. Yeah, I’m always striving to improve. Think of it progress, not perfection. I noticed a few weeks ago that I wasn’t seeing what I wanted for the amount of time and energy I was putting into my workouts. That meant it was time for a change! I talked with my love and we decided P90X2 was one we could do together. So, I wake up and clear the living room floor and get everything ready, then get him up to have a light snack and get started.

Day one was CoreX and it was great (I’m getting the feeling I won’t find any not great though). The moves are really complex which left me feeling like I’ll do 200% better the next time since I’ll know what’s coming. Note to reader: this is why exercise programs always say to watch before you do! So, yesterday morning we huffed and puffed and groaned through it and by about 2 p.m. my abs were already sore. Then I taught kickboxing last night :) . This morning was Plyocide, or Death by Plyometrics, as Tony Horton calls it. I felt more in my element here as it’s cardiovascular endurance training. think of how athletes train….yep, that was me! I was jumping and laughing at the “rabbit” so hard. My glutes were killing me this morning, but plyo worked them out, then worked them over. My endurance level is above average because I’ve trained for it to be (hello! I have to kickbox AND talk at the same time for an hour!) and this workout still challenged me through the variety of movements. During water breaks I was usually still hopping around and I have been pumped up ALL DAY.

Tomorrow is the Recovery and Mobility and I do love playing with foam rollers:) Each workout so far has been an hour long, but we have found it doable before the workday starts. After the workout, Alan goes to get ready and I whip up some Shakeology (today he made mine though, that sweet man!). It all works with some effort. P90 isn’t a beginner program in my professional opinion, but there are others beginners can try and I WILL make sure to get a review of those up in this next week.

Just a Little Something Personal

This is about a life altering situation and how it has literally changed everything. Just warning ya! For those interested in what I’m doing here:

How Beach Body is giving me my life back

I haven’t been a coach for very long, but I feel like I need to share this. You see, I’ve known about Beach Body and their products for over a decade now. I was introduced to them as most people are: through late night infomercials! I purchased Yoga Booty Ballet once I had the funds and thought that workout would kill me. It’s weird to think of that now. Since those infomercial watching, wishful days I have shed over 100 pounds off of my 5’6″ frame. When you accomplish something like that you feel as though it is your testimony. You so badly want others to feel this energy and grab life before it passes them by… Naturally, my path eventually took me into fitness where I became a fitness instructor, a personal trainer, and then a nutritionist. As happy as I was with what I was doing, there was always something missing. I could only motivate so many and I could only teach so much. On top of all the motivating was the heart crushing realization that behind the excuses it seemed like people really just did NOT care.

Fast forward a bit to this past fall of 2011. I became pregnant with my third child. Our other 2 are 12 and 10 and yes, this was planned because we’re a little crazy like that! I was excited and our entire family was extremely hopeful. Everything was running smoothly and tests were coming back with great news. The doctor even remarked that this baby was growing very strong, very fast. I like to think of it as super baby! Into my second trimester (I was sick as a DOG and bedridden for months!) I went in for a routine visit. There was no heartbeat. The baby had died for no known reasons and suddenly ALL of my dreams, plans, and goals for the future seemed to come to a crashing halt. After all was said and done, I lay face down sobbing on my bathroom floor telling my loving husband that I no longer believed God had a plan for me. My Purpose in life was gone, and with that a piece of me as well.

It took a few weeks to come back into the land of the living and it was not pretty. I drank heavily to numb the pain and I simply sat around for a while. I had nothing left to give, or so I thought. The beach body coaching opportunity was brought to my attention a couple of years ago when I purchased Turbo Fire, but I never gave it much thought. Well, since I was down for the count, I began reading through all my old stuff in my home office. I was seriously considering leaving health and fitness forever. I came across the team beach body info and one night I told my husband I wanted to look into it. I even contacted Jenell Summers, who was extremely helpful and very patient with me! My husband is my grounding force and I asked him to check it out before I pursued it any further. While waiting for all of this I started moving again. I dusted off my old Chalean Extreme DVDs and popped in the Turbo Fire (thought it would kill me the first time back!). I began to LIVE again. Well, my husband did the research and concluded that it looked like a legit business opportunity and he was fine if I wanted to move forward. And boy did I…

There was a lot that happened my first 2 weeks. I made Emerald and got 32 success club points before I knew what success club was! The great thing is that success isn’t the point. I know it might sound cheesy to say that a business opportunity gave me my life back, but it did. You see, I was working out more and harder. I stopped drinking and I dealt with my feelings the way I always had: through a puddle of sweat. Not only did Beach Body coaching restore my sense of purpose, it gave my kids their mom back. I’ll never forget the day my son said, “I’m glad you’re finally ok”. They were used to a mom that fought. My kids know a mom that got up early to work out so that she could live long enough to see them grow up to be healthy, happy people (that’s another part of my story: my mom died at the age of 42). My husband got his confident wife back and guess what? HE signed on to be a coach! He has no fitness background, but he digs what Beach Body is trying to do. P90X2 just came in the mail and we’ve committed to doing the full 90 days together. I’m happy again.

I believe in purpose once more and I know that God is not done with me yet. I will never know why baby Alex didn’t get to stay with us, but I know there is always a reason and I know that SOMEBODY needs to hear this story. NEVER QUIT… You have a purpose and a plan. You have a unique story and niche to fill.  Beach body has afforded me a way to reach even more people for HEALTH. Bikini picas are awesome, but for me it’s about living for my family and fighting for every single day I can get.

My next goals? My husband and I are going to Summit in June and I do plan on being diamond. Also, I’m working on my own core training system to help even more people get in shape AND feel accomplished and awesome.
