Januray 13 2014

This pic I was taking in under 1800 calories, about 80 grams of carbs, 160 grams of protein, and only about 20-30 grams of fat. My diet was MOSTLY veggies (not a bad thing really). I was having a hard time getting muscle definition to show and was all-around slowed down by stubborn fat and low energy.

I know the angles isn’t the same, but I don’t take a lot of photos in my bra :)

My Fivesse Bag Review

Ladies! I have a treat for you!

As many of you know, I attended the first annual Blogfest this August. Well, being one of the lightning round speaker, the sweet girls at Fit Approach hooked us up with some goodies. One of my favorite goodies was a beyond fabulous gym bag from Fivesse.

You may not have heard of Fivesse, so let me get you in the loop :) You’ll thank me.

Fivesse is a female owned biz (I’m not against the men, but HOORAY!) and caters to women with gym bags that are fashionable and functional for all that extra stuff we all carry. Let me introduce you to the masterminds behind this wonderful brand (and stay tuned to the bottom for some exciting news!).

Susan & Nancy are sisters who have a passion for pretty things, gorgeous fabrics, and fine

handbags. They love to workout and show their style in everything they do. They believe that

life is better when you feel organized, and also that you should always surround yourself

with things that make you smile.

Both working moms and avid exercisers, they found there was a need for a fitness bag that

not only shows a sense of style, but that also has a sense of organization and functionality.

Their idea was to create the “anti-tote” gym bag. First, they wanted a bag that did not look

like a typical gym bag, but more like a designer handbag with a beautiful shape, in cheery

patterns and colors. Second, they wanted a bag that was more organized and personalized

in size and shape to an individual’s fitness routine.

So came the idea for Fivesse. Organized and smart on the inside, good looking on the outside.

They truly hope that their custom patterns and on-trend colors will make you smile,

while their bags’ organization and ergonomics will help you feel organized and confident.

Shine on, ladies!

You’re ready to see it now right?

fivesse_NYjan'14

Fivesse offers a variety of bags to meet any need you fit ladies may have:

Introducing Fivesse gym bags, a revolutionary fitness accessory made by women for women. Nancy Apatov and Susan Johnson believe life runs better when you feel organized and smart on the inside and good looking on the outside. They saw a need in the marketplace when they couldn’t find a bag that could keep their items organized throughout the day, and had a look that projects their personal style.

The first collection of bags consists of the Home-Gym-Work bag, which is available in four patterns, an attachable garment bag, and the Home-Gym-Home bag, also available in four patterns. All bags feature individually labeled pockets to keep each item in its place, an ear bud wrap to keep cords tangle-free, a hidden valuables pocket to keep items safe, and a separate laundry bag for sweaty clothes post workout.

The larger of the two bags, The Home-Gym-Work bag, is perfect for the career woman on the go as it will hold all the essentials needed for a busy day ahead. This bag retails for $124. The garment bag attaches to the back of the Home-Gym-Work bag and retails for $64.

The Home-Gym-Home bag is a smaller version featuring back straps to easily attach a yoga mat, and it retails for $99.

The name, Fivesse, is inspired by the Japanese philosophy “5S” – when everything is organized and in its proper place, life just runs better.

Sort, Store, Systemize, Sustain, so you can Shine.

For more information on Fivesse bags, including retail information, please visit www.fivesse.com.

I actually got a gym membership just so I could tote mine around…true story. And I’m loving it! It’s easy to store things (even though my contents aren’t all that girly) and it keeps shoes, soggy sweat towels, water bottles and car keys separate. It’s a no-brainer organizational tool for the girl on the go…who also wants a six-pack and a nice butt. I found that the straps are just the right length to carry comfortably, as opposed to regular long gym bag straps that cause your bag to hit you on the backside every other step and make you limp like Forrest Gump after getting shot in the buttocks….who wants all that awkwardness?

I promised awesome news, so read on:

Breast Cancer Awareness Blog Posts – Pink bags giving back 5% of October sales to Breast Cancer Research

Fivesse, the fitness bag concept that combines functionality and fashion for the woman on the go will be donating 5% of sales during the month of October to breast cancer research. The fun and feminine bags were developed based on the Japanese philosophy of operations and organization…providing women with a stylish bag they can be proud to carry while also keeping each element of their day organized which in turn leads to a happier day.

  1. Anything that you may want in a fitness bag has its specific place and holder, including a secret pocket for valuables and a place for dirty clothes.
  2. The Fivesse garment bag is available to attach to the back of the Home Gym Work bag to avoid wrinkling your work clothes.
  3. For the yogi out there, the Home Gym Home bag contains straps on the bag for all yoga mats.
  4. Each pocket and area of the bag is labeled so nothing gets misplaced.
  5. The bags are designed with a feminine touch to combine fashion with fitness and with function.

That totally qualifies as shopping for a cause! So get to clicking, browse through and purchase a Christmas present that will spur healthy new habits AND maybe just save a life.

To your health,

Michelle

Special Guest Post: The Art of Eating In

the art of eating in
Eating out is practically synonymous with the weekend.  It’s among the best ways to relax, enjoy some company and eat deliciously!  Unfortunately, the majority of restaurants aren’t concerned about using low-calorie cooking methods or ingredients, and those few meals out may stick with you even after the weekend is over.  Oh, thanks for the souvenir…on my hips.

Maintaining a healthy weight or losing weight is mostly about what we put in our bodies.  Bummer!  I wish it were something else, like how much I laughed every day.  I’m a serious laugher.

Cooking at home allows you 100% control over what goes into your meal, giving you opportunities to eat your favorite items, but with a much lower calorie count.

I am not discouraging eating out, or asking you to give it up.  If I didn’t eat out once a week, I would either be wallowing in self pity or be so annoyed I’d stress-eat my way through a whole box of cereal.   I just need to eat someone else’s food, in a place that isn’t my table, counter, or desk….or bed.

But, during the week, I enjoy EATING IN just as much as eating out because I’ve learned how to keep food healthy, light, and delicious.

Eating fresh, natural food gives me plenty of energy, and it balances out a weekend indulgence or two.  I don’t feel deprived; I feel balanced and happy.  For me, it’s leading the delicious life!

Realities Of Restaurant Food.  Warning: This may get ugly. sizzle pie

Restaurants need to keep costs down in order to make any money.  I completely understand, and I don’t expect them to do otherwise.  The restaurant business is tough!  They also need to ensure customers LOVE their food, so they typically load it with fat, salt and sugar.  In order to accomplish these two, they will:

  • Cook with plenty of oil and butter
  • Use full-fat ingredients (tastier) and/or processed ingredients (cheaper)
  • Fill the majority of the meal with carbohydrates: bread, chips, some form of  potatoes. Carbs are cheap, bulk up your portion, and make you stuffed full so you feel you got your money’s worth.
  • skimp on the healthier ingredients like fresh produce and lean meats because they’re the most expensive.

breakfast and blogging

Practicing the Art of Eating In

  • Old-fashioned oats, cooked in vanilla almond milk with ribbons of almond butter, a few raspberries and a tablespoon of flaxseed
  • Over-easy      eggs (1 whole, 2 whites), garden-picked tomatoes, sprinkled with Parmesan, cilantro and a dollop of sour cream
  • Decaf chai tea with almond milk
  • Ice water infused with fresh mint

This Meal Eating Out Vs. Eating In

At a restaurant, this meal would be at least $10.  It cost me less than $1.  The meal at the restaurant would have skimped on the tomato, the sour cream would have been full fat, the oatmeal would have been loaded with cream, and I would have had to ask for 1 egg and 2 eggs whites, annoying the waitress and chef. Almond milk, my favorite, would likely not have been an option.

My oats were creamy because of the way I cook them, not because I added a 1/4 cup of half and half.  I used a whole handful of cherry tomatoes, not a little garnish on the top.  The eggs weren’t cooked in a chunk of butter, but a spray of heart-healthy canola oil.
I saved money, calories, and time.  I boosted the nutrition.  And, it was all very simple to cook.

You may be thinking,
“But Jessica Joy, I don’t like cooking, like you do.” Well, I assumed I also hated cooking until I got a decent knife.

a decent knife
A good knife improves your entire cooking experience!  I found this life-changing tool for $25.  Your cooking does not need to be elaborate or time-consuming, but it is worth investing some time and money in for your health’s sake.

Easy ways to save calories when cooking at home

  • Use  canola spray, olive oil spray or a little coconut oil.  These are both heart-healthy and in a small portions.
  • Fill half  your plate with fruits and vegetables.
  • Feature one or two carbs per meal.  For me, I love popcorn, so often I forego rice or potatoes to have some popcorn afterwards.  Or, I might have an open face  sandwich to create a little wiggle room for a treat.
  • Eat  protein, preferably lean protein, with every meal to stabilize blood sugar levels and keep you fuller longer

Eating in is a delicious art.  Enjoy healthy food, keep the cooking simple, and reap life-boosting benefits.  You won’t leave the table with a “food-brick” in your belly, and you can stay in your pajamas….if you like.

#IDEAWORLD2014 Recap….I survived :)

Hello Beautiful People!

I am finally feeling back into the swing of things since returning from California last week. Sometimes it takes a week, get over it.

While I would LOVE to share all the wonderful things I experienced, there’s a lot to cover over the conference itself so I’m sticking to the basics. Give it a read and PLEASE click on the sponsor links within the post so you can check out some of the super cool things I got to check out :) Let’s hit the highlights, shall we?

I MADE IT!

Ideaworld 2014 banner

I have the picture to prove it. Ideaworld #blogfest started Thursday morning and I took my seat in the back. Thursday and Friday were probably the MOST fun days (that’s a WHOLE other blog post people), but my favorite parts were actually the brands. You see, during Tweet breaks (don’t fight it, it’s totally a thing) we were introduced to the brands who were sponsoring Ideaworld and making everything possible for our betterment and education….and they were giving us plenty of free swag. Word to the wise: you want my life, be willing to work as hard as I do.

REEBOK: King of swag

Here’s the funny thing….I’ve never really been a Reebok girl. I think I always associated them with the old-school aerobics instructors in tights and high tops….eeeewwwww. Reebok has totally redeemed themselves though! they’ve successfully been through an awesome rebranding (complete with new logo) and they were a fierce presence at the conference. I scored a bag, tank, water bottle and towel the very first day! That night, I got me some shoes :)

Ideaworld Reebok

I’ve already been asked about the shoes since being home and NOBODY believes they’re Reebok, BUT they are…Reebok One Cushion to be exact. Go get you some…you will not be disappointed.

Ideaworld Reeboks

UNDER ARMOUR: Still the coolest :)

I am a geek to no end, and I’m OK with that. Under Armour’s own Shauna Harrison @shauna_Harrison was there to talk about the newly launched #IWILLWHATIWANT campaign, and you’ll be getting more info on that very soon. BUT first, check out our flex off:

Ideaworld 2014 under armour

Yeah, that happened….

OK, so UA also gave bloggers a brand spankin new UA39 (the BEST of the best in heart rate monitoring and other super techy stuff). I’ve been keeping track of all of my workouts and performance outputs during each one. As you know, I vary workouts since I have exercise ADD and it’s been awesome to track on this sweet little device.

Ideaworld Under Armour UA39

That was a 450 calorie leg day :)

LORNA JANE: The SWEETEST smile at Ideaworld

If you have yet to meet Lorna Jane Clarkson and her FABULOUS clothes, you really must get out of Academy more. I was gifted with a super awesome tank top AND the ability to hear Lorna Jane speak on how her boutique clothing line came to be and what the philosophy of her company is. I was inspired to say the least and even picked myself up some more goodies at the Lorna Jane booth :) I fully encourage you to check out movenourishbelieve.com for blog posts, health tips, workouts and more on fun healthy living.

Ideaworld Lorna Jane

Are you tired of pics of my swag yet? OK, I’ll stop :)

I try to keep the posts short enough for my attention span, but I do need to show some love to some of the other sponsors. I don’t get a dime for you to click on these! I’m just trying to share what I experienced with you :) So check the links below for people who are all too willing to help you achieve the fit life.

Kick in the Pants Monday

This video series will be replacing Tough Love Tuesday.

THIS is one you will want to hear, especially if you’re struggling with reaching goals….

Things are changing :) Don’t fight it…

Hey fit peeps!

Spring and Summer give new flight to dreams and change is an inevitable and unavoidable exchange during this season. Contrary to popular opinion, change can be a very good thing if welcomed with an open mind.

change

We can find ourselves reluctant, but let’s remember a few things about change and your overall health:

  1. A change in diet (the daily foods you consume) can boost metabolism and result in greater fat loss, hence the weekly “cheat” meals so many competitors swear by (I live each day like a cheat meal, but info on that will come later).
  2. Changing your workout routine is imperative to keep the body from adapting and hitting the dreaded plateau.

So, you see? Two examples of how change can be crucial to reaching our goals.

In honor of an open mind to change, I have some HUGE news that is worth sharing with those that frequent this blog:

I am a blogger.

Um, well, duh…

I know it seems stupid to point out, but let me explain.

I have been in the fitness industry for over 10 years now. I have led boot camps, done countless personal training sessions, taught yoga in class and private forms, taught any and all group exercise formats, led nutrition education series and experimented in the kitchen for that long as well. I found something odd happening a couple of months ago: I became exhausted and less than thrilled with my profession. Blogs became a burden and sharing any information seemed completely and totally for nothing. I was inundated with emails daily that contained questions which had been addressed in years past on this very blog. I came to the realization that I am only 1 person (seriously, no team here) and I can only do so much.

Between training appointments, dealing with other people’s emotions and drama, seeking to lead a change in several cultures at once, and worrying about my own physique and what I had to prove….well, I lost myself. The best part of losing yourself is that it grants you a unique opportunity to not only find yourself, but discover the YOU  that you actually want to be. Over the past few months I would not have wanted to hang out with me.

So, I’ve been working on an exercise that has helped me re-discover what I am here for and how to turn that into what I do on a daily basis…without wanting to kill people :)

I began keeping lists (OH! I love lists!) related to what I love about what I do now, what I could possibly delegate, and what I need to send packing. The interesting thing I found was in the LOVE catagory:

  • Blogging: sharing my story and expertise with others in the hopes that they will find the inspiration to be the very best version of themselves. It is through this that I hope to empower others to share their uniqueness so that change in the way we think about ourselves and react to others becomes more organic and natural. Plus, I like words and trying to sound super smart :)
  • Workouts: let me make it clear though…I like workouts of ALL kinds and I tend to mix it up frequently. I want to share workouts with others to inspire them to move their bodies and discover the fun in fitness. I do NOT, however, enjoy workouts that require me to constantly obsess about my anatomy and how it looks. I mean, at the end of the day, it’s only my hubby and myself that see this in all its glory…who cares what everybody else thinks?
  • FOOD! Oh, I love the kitchen cooking and totally pretending that I am from Italy (I’m actually Irish/German, but whatever). I like to experiment with food, maybe make it a little healthier, and cook for the love of those who put up with me. THEN, I like to share what I have learned.

Now, my family is far above these 2, but I don’t keep a blog on them (my son would kill me). What I found MOST interesting is that the things I LOVE the MOST were not really getting done. Why? Because my vision was clouded.

So, I am making some changes to this blog AND to my life that will help to streamline everything into a more blissful experience.

Need help getting your nutrition together? Thanks to my INCREDIBLY patient business partner, Fitness Haus will be launching this Summer and will offer you a brand new take on food. It will allow me to play more in the kitchen and share my experiences with you. You’ll get weekly meal plans (don’t worry! It’s not deprivation based. I want you to learn to love food again), recipes, grocery lists, fit tips and nutrition tips.

Want workouts that won’t break the bank OR your back? I have a dozen workout journal filled with workouts. I like what I do and have the opportunity to film short workouts for you so that you can begin to build your database of go-to exercises for any goal you set. ALL right here on this blog…and of course, the YouTube channel with the most informed and most patient subscribers. I’ll be keeping it real with real-time workouts, sweat and ZERO makeup…cause that’s how I roll.

I’ll be blogging here about new products and supplements, fun workouts that I’ll be trying out, news in health and fitness, and all the happenings in the #sweatpink community.

What about live classes and trainings?

I am keeping those to a minimum and beginning to shave some off of my bursting schedule. Bottom line: I’m no good to anybody if I’m trying to save everybody :)

From me to you, I appreciate that you have hung out with me and I promise the very best is yet to come….so stick around, you’ll be glad you did.

Seeing health and fitness in a whole new light

#fuelyourbetter A Look at Vega Sport Performance Protein

Today is the day (well, one of the days) that I review a product I have been testing.

VEGA SPORT PERFORMANCE PROTEIN

Yeah, did you get that? Cause you should…

Let’s get through the science first…I love science!

What’s the big deal about this protein when there are like a BAJILLION other proteins on the market? Check it out:

  • Vega Sport is a PERFORMANCE protein, not just a meal replacement or tasty protein.
  • Vega Sport is designed to help YOU recover quicker so you can get back out and do what you love sooner.
  • Vega Sport is a CLEAN, plant-based fuel source so it doesn’t upset the digestive system like some protein powders.

What are the claims of Vega Sport?

  1. It’s the very FIRST completely all-natural, plant-based performance recovery drink.
  2. It is dairy, gluten and soy free (the BIG players in food allergies and intolerances).
  3. It burns 100% clean, leaving no extra work for your liver.
  4. It contains NO artificial flavors, colors or sweeteners.

Cool right? Trust me, it is.

So, what does it DO?

  1. Complete, synergistic, alkaline-forming protein blend helps to #fuelyourbetter without creating a stressful environment in the gut as most proteins do. Who needs more stress in their gut?
  2. It contains 5,000 mg of BCAA’s which are basically little magic things that bond and repair to muscle tissue. What does this mean? More recovery + less soreness = a more fun YOU.
  3. Improves strength and exercise performance.
  4. Repairs and builds lean muscle mass, creating a more functional physique.
  5. Reduces recovery time between training.

OK, I was totally sold on that last one there :) I love to train and I would live in my gym if my family didn’t think that was totally weird. All of my training created a whole new world of problems to deal with when it came to recovery. If you know my story, then you know I have to be careful with the food/supplements because my body is a walking, ticking time bomb of inflammation…..and I’m over here just trying to make it da’bomb.

Another nerdy but cool fact about this protein is that it is tested for banned substances. Since the FDA doesn’t control or regulate supplements, we all just trust the packaging until somebody drops dead. Even then, we blame the person and not the company. Well, a few companies (very few) decided to pay the piper and stand out from the crowd with testing from informedchoice.org (that’s a listing for tested products, check it out). This small fact really makes me more apt to reach for this protein as opposed to what passes for protein on the grocery store shelves nowadays.

How about the taste? I mean, we won’t ingest it if it doesn’t taste good right? Unless you’re me… If you’re me then you will chug anything they ask you to test :) but at least I’m honest about it!

I tested the Vanilla flavor. I’ll be honest, of all the flavors of protein, vanilla is my LEAST favorite. Why? No clue. Even when I was younger I felt vanilla was boring, but could be greatly improved by copious amounts of chocolate (as can ANYTHING)….but I digress. Taste: it was actually quite decent on its own, even for vanilla. Let’s take a look at the good points first:

  • It wasn’t gritty! Oh my gosh, plant-based protein scares me due to the fact that it can often times be super gritty….like trying to swallow watered down grits, blech! This was smooth as can be just mixed with water.
  • The vanilla wasn’t overwhelming. I hate when companies pack too much in to the product and you leave your smoothie smelling like a Starbuck’s barista just gave you a sponge bath in vanilla….
  • Absolutely ZERO yucky aftertaste. You know what I’m talking about. You have a protein shake post workout and can still taste it on your tongue 3 days later. Grossness…. The reason for most aftertaste is the crap they put in as fillers.

Anything bad? Not really as far as protein shakes go. The taste was good, but not overwhelming. If you are a protein shake junky (we have a support group that meets every Monday at the smoothie bar…counterproductive), then you’ll notice a HUGE lack of sweetness. Take a deep breath, this is actually a good thing.

What’s a review without a couple of pictures documenting how I’ve been #fuelingmybetter right? PLUS, recipes at the bottom! Don’t scroll down! Cheater…

vega yoga

Me, channeling my best dancer after a killer workout…fueled by Vega Sport, duh

So, what is the sport I fuel? It’s called life people! I hate running, so much so that I bought a tank top for $20 just to shout it to the world. Don’t get me wrong, I love runners, just not a fan of me running. So, my sports revolve around yoga, MMA, weights and the exhausting task of kicking butt fabulously every single day….
